Welcome to The Addition, where I cover the crossover between culture, media and sport. On Monday morning, I settled down to watch the Women's Football Show on the BBC iPlayer, hoping to catch up with the highlights from the Crystal Palace vs Spurs game. Technically, I was able to. They were on my TV, but the soggy London weather led to clips that were barely watchable as the camera was covered in rain. For some reason, nobody actually doing the filming dealt with this. Media companies wouldn't let men's football highlights, even those from the lower tiers of the game, be almost unusable. It shouldn't be ok in the women's game either.
Changes to The TraitorsThe Traitors UK season three is over and it feels like it is the biggest one yet. This may just be down to my increased awareness, (I wrote previously that I had become obsessed with the show after tuning in for the first time,) but it does feel like a tipping point. Whether it’s the late introduction of The Seer or the order in which players enter breakfast, there are some flaws in the format. However, it is still fantastic television, with the backstabbing, paranoia and drama escalating over the 12 episodes. Given its growth, the players are now surely aware they will become high(ish)-profile figures when they leave the castle. Social media is a huge part of this, with TikTok and Instagram feeds filled with content from the contestants. Brand deals and other opportunities undoubtedly await the most compelling of them. The fact that The Traitors is explicitly a game and the aim is to win money will keep the participants mostly honest about their intentions. However, some could go in knowing that the potential rewards go beyond the prize pot and alter their behaviour accordingly. Read the full article with a paid subscription.
