There's too much football

At the BBC HQ up in Salford there was a wall adorned with images of such luminaires as a Rolf Harris and… Jimmy Savile. For some time they remained in place, next to the Religion and Ethics desk. Others who featured weren’t exactly happy with the company they were keeping. Not surprising, given staff had branded the facade “the paedophile wall” as incidents came to light. It has subsequently been painted over, which is probably best for all concerned. Perhaps a nice mural of a yewtree should go there instead.

AI is of huge concern in the media industry, something I’ve discussed in multiple podcast episodes (here and here). Today, the News Media Association launched a campaign called “Make it fAIr”, pushing back on UK Government proposals that would favour big tech companies over the people actually creating the work. My understanding is that the campaign was dreamed up, at least in part, between Guardian News and Media and New UK, who don’t often see eye-to-eye on things. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Tonight, TNT Sports in the UK will begin broadcasting three nights of Premier League football. It’s another week in which there is top-tier football, either domestic or European, on almost every night. Few people love watching football, either live or on TV, more than I do. But at a certain point, you have to wonder if it is all a bit much.

The packed February schedule rather underlines the issue. The Carabao Cup semi-finals began on February 5. There was been major men’s football; - League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League or European competition - on every night up to and including February 16. European competition resumed on Tuesday, February 18, with Aston Villa vs Liverpool also taking place on the Wednesday. Last night was the first day in that period without top-flight football on TV.

That doesn’t even include the Women’s Super League, the Championship (which is as bonkers as ever,) or the other top European leagues. However much any of us enjoy settling down to watch these games, this is an objectively insane situation for fans and players alike.

The football authorities have not helped, expanding competitions and trying to build up nonsense like the Club World Cup. Ultimately, though, the TV companies have made the schedule relentless.

However, Reach, the company that publishes the Daily Mirror, amongst others, seem to have somewhat limited themselves. Ahead of the game, Jack Benjamin at...

There's lots more on Super Bowl LIX coverage below, but one thing in particular did make me laugh. The Fox cameras panned to Rupert Murdoch taking in the game at the New Orleans Superdome. Cue gushing from commentator Kevin Burkhardt, who expressed his excitment at seeing "the boss" sitting in the crowd. Sponsored by: 1440 News. Without...

In a repeat of 2023, the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Kansas City Chiefs. We don't have the battle between the brothers narrative this time as Jason Kelce has...
